This map illustrates the main social groups, uses and experiences that we have identified in the Smithfield area. We have selected six fictional personas to summarise key sensory experiences and engagements with different areas at different times of the day or week in and around Smithfield Market that shape individual relations with the area. The aim is not to create an encompassing map but to evoke the many different ways in which this vibrant area shapes strong feelings of attachment in different user groups from office workers, to residents, market workers, visitors or transient users such as cab drivers or couriers. Juxtaposition has been the common theme emerging from our research. Smithfield is a unique and special place for many of its users because of the intense juxtaposition of histories, times, social groups, sensescapes and individual and group experiences.
